The major maintenance required by Guascor gas engines is also known as maintenance type R3.

Commonly, this type of preventive maintenance is carried our each 50.400 running hours (whatever the gas the engine consumes).

In this occasion, we show you some pictures of genuine spare parts we used to carry out the engine Overhaul of that Guascor engine in our facilities.

Required labor in our facilities was 1-2 weeks in this case, in order to finish everything. Main repairs, renews, and refurbishments we carried out were the following ones:

  • Renew of main bearings.
  • Renew oil pump and water pump.
  • Renew all pistons, cylinder liners.
  • Refurbishment of con-rods, changing the small end bushings and the bolts.
  • Refurbishment of all cylinder heads.

This time we show you how we usually perform a maintenance type 40.000 running hours on Jenbacher type 6 gas engines, which runs with Natural Gas.

For this type of preventive maintenance, our team goes to the customer’s Power Plant. Anyway, there are some labors which «RS Motor» has to perform in the workshop. These labors are highlighted with the symbol “*”.

40.000 HOURS MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST ON JENBACHER J620 GAS ENGINE

» Disassembly of the intercooler for subsequent delivery to «RS Motor». The intercooler will undergo ultrasound cleaning, which consists of the following steps (*):

  1. Preliminary visual inspection and exterior appearance check.
  2. Preliminary hydraulic test to verify absence of leaks.
  3. Dismantling of all covers.
  4. Replacement of fixing elements.
  5. Repair of female threads of the intercooler tube bundle.
  6. Cleaning of tube bundle and covers by using an ultrasonic cleaning machine.
  7. Renew of water side gaskets.
  8. Inner and outlet painting of water side covers.
  9. Complete assembly of the intercooler, respecting the recommended tightening according to the standard requirements.
  10. Final hydraulic test for 8-12 hours for product validation, prior to its assembly and installation on the engine.

» Replacement of precombustion chambers with their respective O-rings. Removal of cylinder heads on the engine is excluded.

» Replacement of the rocker cover gaskets.

» Intake and exhaust valve timing.

» Degreasing of the gas injection valves.

» Replacement of the rubber springs which have not able for being installed again.

» Renew the actuator linkage.

» Replacement of the main lubricating oil filter.

» Renew throttle valves.

» Replacement of air filters.

» Renew 2x vibration dampers.

» Replacement of the elastic coupling generator-engine.

» Renew crankcase ventilation filters.

» Checking of high connections and wiring.

» Disassembly of the exhaust gas turbocharger and subsequent mounting on the engine. Turbocharger standard maintenance or cleaning can be considered or not, depending on the customer’s decision.

» Cleaning the battery connection terminals.

» Standard refurbishment of the 2x starters with replacement of shaft, bearings, relay and seal (*). Optional.

» Overhaul of the main lubricating oil pump with bushings replacement (*). Optional.

» Replacement of gaskets, screws and other minor spare parts.

» Complete engine assembly.

» Engine connection, commissioning and subsequent checking of control parameters through DIA.NE control system.

Refurbishment of cylinder heads DEUTZ/MWM/CAT TBG632/TCG2032/CG-260

Cylinder heads are one of the most important parts of the engines. As a consequence, a good status of them is mandatory in order to keep the engine running and producing as much as possible.

For this reason, «RS Motor» has in Porriño, Vigo a warehouse with all necessary elements for performing a good refurbishment of cylinder heads. In this case, we are going to show the reconditioning process of cylinder heads for gas engines DEUTZ/MWM TBG632/TCG2032, known also as CAT CG 260-16.

So now, like in previous posts, we are going to explain how we carry out the refurbishment of DEUTZ/MWM cylinder heads:

  1. Reception.
  2. Complete disassembly.
  3. Cleaning by using an ultrasonic cleaning machine.
  4. Test to check absence of cracks.
  5. Renew of gaskets and other parts (valves, seats, rotocaps, valve guides, etc.).
  6. Assembly of the cylinder head.
  7. Hydraulic test.
  8. Primer and painting.
  9. Packaging and shipment.

Based on the MIC4 series, MOTORTECH produces a special version as a replacement for the TEM-ZS1 and TEM-ZS3 ignition system use on MWM / DEUTZ gas engines. Designed as an Exchange device, the MIC4-ZS enables a quick conversion without great effort.

In addition to the MIC4-ZS ignition controller, the prepared conversion kits include the required high-performance ignition coils. Pre-chamber spark plugs or spark plug leads can be re-used, as these ignition coils have the same secondary connections as the original ones. ENGINE OVERHAULS

An engine overhaul is a major maintenance intervention, where the engine is removed and disassembled part by part, following approved assembly processes. Worn elements are replaced and the reconditioned engine is returned to its initial state of use.

Due to the complexity of the procedure, we generally take the overhauled engine to our workshop. Here we have all the necessary means and equipment to carry out these works with all the guarantees on engines up to 4.50 MW.

Sometimes, and where downtime makes it unfeasible to remove the engine to our workshop, we can perform the overhaul on an exchange block, minimizing downtime-machine and resuming production in minimal time.

RECONDITIONING ENGINES

Reconditioning an engine involves disassembling its mechanical elements, inspecting and verifying the state of the engine, cleaning the mechanical parts with ultrasounds and carrying out controls and/or hydraulic tests. Worn elements are replaced and the reconditioned engine is restored to zero hours.

In this case we will try to show you the most common intervals of preventive maintenance steps on Jenbacher gas engines.

It is well know that the main Jenbacher engines on the market are: Jenbacher type 3, Jenbacher type 4 and/or Jenbacher type 6. The number of cylinders does not affect to the interval, but this is not the case with the type of gas (natural gas, landfill gas, sewerage gas, coal mine gas, syntgas…).

«RS Motor» is able to perform any type of preventive maintenance on Jenbacher gas engines. Usually preventive maintenances are performed on-site, but in case of Overhaul or major Overhaul, this could be carried out both “on-site” or in the workshop of «RS Motor».

In this case we are going to explain typical operations that «RS Motor» has to take into account when a Jenbacher engine which runs with natural gas needs PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE.

  • For replacement of expendables/consumables like oil filters, the interval should be about 1.000 – 2.000 running hours. Then, the intermediate maintenances occur each 10.000 running hours.
  • After that, in case of Jenbacher engines type 6, the Overhauls occur at 30K and/or 60K running hours. In this case, renew of pistons, main bearings, cylinder liners… is necessary. These Overhauls can be performed “on-site” or in «RS Motor».

Apart of preventive or scheduled maintenances, sometimes the engine has unexpected failures. When this happens, «RS Motor» goes to the customer’s power plant in order to make some inspections for determining the scope of damage. Then the engine is repair taking into account its history, the running hours, etc. This situation is usually called as CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE. The key is always to try to shorten the stop time of the power plant due t the fac that each hour the engine is stopped, means a lot of money to the final customer.

In both cases, when you need preventive or corrective maintenances, «RS Motor» is one of the best companies you have to take into account. Engine Overhaul of 2x diesel marine engines DEUTZ TBD620V12

Today we show you a beautiful project carried out two years ago in «RS Motor». Our specialized engineers and technicians performed 2x engine Overhauls on 2x DEUTZ TBD620V12. Both engines are not cogeneration engines, they are marine engines (port & starboard main engines).

Once we received both engines in our own workshop, we dismounted them until getting naked blocks. Then, after a deep cleaning process, we checked that the crankshaft and engine block were OK for being refurbished again.

After that, we reconditioned all engine parts like intercoolers, water pumps, oil pumps, con-rods, fuel injection pumps, plate heat exchangers,…

When everything was installed on the engine and we finished the assembling of it, we went to the vessel in order to carry out the commissioning and the sea trial under the supervision of marine surveyors.

What was the result?. Well, as usually, everything was successful so the customer was happy with «RS Motor» and, as a consequence, that customer still trust on the experience of our company.

The vessel is still sailoring in 2020, thanks to the knowledge of «RS Motor» and also, thanks to the use of OEM and genuine DEUTZ/MWM spare parts.

Along this article, we want to talk about one of the main enviromental challenges that CHP plants are facing nowadays.

The reduction of pollutants to the atmosphere, is a key aspect within the use of Natural Gas or Biogas Reciprocating Engines to produce Heat and Power.

Thoughout the last years the legislation in terms of Hazard emissions to the atmosphere all over the world has become more restrictive with lower limit values, therefore sometimes is compulsory find Solutions to cut down the different values under the legal limits.

In many cases, the solution that allows be inside the legal emission values is using a catalyst element.

The most common catalyst, are the next:

SELECTIVE CATALYTIC REDUCTION – SCR 

Nitrogen Oxides are commonly the main headache about the atmospheric contamination when we talk about the emissions control of gas engines.

SCR catalyst (selective catalytic reduction), are used to cut down the NOx levels in the exhaust gases. The exhaust gases are mixed with a metered amount of Ad-Blue, afterwards the pollutant gases go throuhgh a Surface of a ceramic honeycomb, coated with noble metals where the NOx are reduced by hydrolysis.

The hydrolysis breaks down the urea, that reacts with the Nitrogen Oxides, turning them into Nitrogen and H2O. To control the levels of NOx a sensor is assembled, thanks to this sensor the Ad-Blue metering is calculated.

The correct Ad-Blue (urea) metering beside their distribution over the catalyst is the key to achive correct pollutant levels.

OXIDATION CATALYST

This kind of catalyst are used to reduce the values of Carbon Monoxide (CO) and un-burnt hydrocarbons, specially formaldehyde.

In the oxidation catalysts, the exhaust gases go through a oxidation element honeycomb, coated with noble metals where the catalytic oxidation is developed to create Hydrogen and Carbon Dioxide, cutting down the Hazard elements in the exhaust gases.

CONCLUSION

With the aim of ensure the engines are running within the legal pollutant limits, producing heat and power on a efficient way, «RS MOTOR» has the ability to carry out catalyst projects for the correct exhaust gas treatmet.

This time we show you one of the biggest repairs of year 2020. In this case, the labor was carried out on a Jenbacher J620 gas engine. In order to shorten the execution time, RS Motor installs to the customer 1x exchange “shortblock” assembled in Jenbacher.

Thanks to this, the execution time of the complete repair, on which the crankshaft of the engine of the customer was damaged, was less than 2 weeks. This is something that only few companies can carry out successfully.

In this occasion the repair was on a Jenbacher gas engine, but anyway, RS Motor has done this type of repairs many times in other Jenbacher engines and of course, in DEUTZ / MWM engines.

The exchange “shortblock/longblock” or engine exchange program of RS Motor, allows to the customers to reduce the stop time of the power plant, saving several thousands of € as a positive consequence.

The specialized team of RS Motor is able to adapt the solutions taking into account the extent of damage of the engine of the customer. Also in many cases, the install of previously Overhauled engines, is widespread when a major Overhaul is needed.

Finally, it is well know that after installing a new engine on a power plant, or after performing an engine overhaul whatever the chosen way is, the commissioning must be performed carefully. All steps from the dismantling to the final start-up are carried out by our field and/or workshop engineers and technicians. Spare parts are always original (OEM or genuine).
